Trivia Night

As some people know, K.Rudd's money has disrupted our plans to hold our trivia night at Ashbury Public School - they have cancelled all functions til the end of the year because they don't know when construction will start.

I've spoken to a few people about other options, and we have some scouts out looking for places.

Canterbury Girls High called me back this morning and offered us their Cantabrian room which they say they have held a trivia night in before and it holds 100 people. It would cost us a $100 donation and I can go and check out its suitability in the next few days.

The Ashbury Senior Citizens hall is available that night, but we would have to request special permission to use it from the General Manager of Canterbury Council, which may be more of a drama than it's worth.

I'd still love to look at what other options are available, we may as well consider all the possibilities! If you are scouting around, please comment on here to let us know what you've found.

Thanks so much to all the people who have made suggestions already and those who are making enquiries for us.

It's a done deal. I've signed for the Cantabrian Room at Canterbury Girls. It's pretty much the same proportions, maybe slightly bigger than the Ashbury one. I only got to look in from the outside because there was a class in there, but there were speakers, so that's a start.

Great. I'm going to try to do a whip around at work to collect unwanted freebies for Trivia night prizes. I will probably need a letter to show I'm not just trying to line my own pocket. I can't make coffee next Monday because of home reading but I am willing to canvass around the shops.

So, a quick wrap of the trivia decisions from today's meeting.

We will start advertising and selling tickets next week. I will design posters and email the pdfs to Robyn to get printed out. I will also sort out tickets themselves. Tix will be $15 per person and will be arranged in tables of 10.

Donation requesting has been allocated as follows:

Cath Hawkshaw: Smith St, Summer Hill
Cathy Miller: Hurlstone Park Shops
Kath Wawatai: Lackey St, Summer Hill
Linda: Dulwich Hill Shops
Crash: Ashfield shops
Ariane: Corporate donations

If anyone else knows anyone they can approach, just let us know.

The theme is Halloween (no brainer for 31st October) and Kath says she has access to props. I know Maddie has been involved in the decorations before - Maddie, if you're reading and would like to be involved we'd love the help. You've done such a great job in previous years!

I need to pay Canterbury Girls for the room, and I will organise a visit to check out the details of the venue, hopefully for the last day of term.

We will do tea and coffee and cake for a gold coin donation. Robyn's looking after that.

We will also sell cold soft drinks for a gold coin. Effy's looking after that and I am providing the esky.

I've asked Maggie about the wine tasting. Will keep you posted.

We are planning on putting all the donations together on Saturday 24th October at my place. Anyone who can help with that will be VERY MUCH appreciated. It's a huge job!

Kath is going to approach Moonbie St to see if they can organise a baby sitting night to help provide baby sitting for people without ready access to it. Kath - can you let me know as soon as you get a response from Moonbie St? It's be great to have it on the posters.

We might also start a bit of a thread discussing other baby sitting options including adding friends to existing baby sitting arrangements a bit closer to the date.

I will also do the posters asking for donations of skills or stuff from parents, as well as the table allocation sheets.

What else have I forgotten?

Also, please forgive me if I've spelled your name wrong, my memory ain't what it used to be. :)

I have done a first pass at the posters (pending some info I am waiting on), but they are very black. Robyn, will Don still be able to print them if they are rather ink intensive?

If not, does anyone else have access to good colour laser printers where lots of ink won't be a problem?

Moonbie Street are happy to provide babysitting for as many kids as we want. I've asked them to do 6.30 to 10.30 but we can extend that if necessary. They have a fantastic area to have the kids. The kids could dress up and do a night time torch walk in the preschool and it would be great -if we added a couple of dollars per family or funded it out of the trivia fund- to provide some halloween based entertainment - eg a witchy story teller or some such thing. And bingo! the kids have a party!! Kath

Ariane said...

You're a dead set legend, Kath. Brilliant. I'll add this info to the posters.

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone, re posters, I was planning on running them through the photocopier at Don's work. Pass the file through and we'll give it a go. I seem to recall that we usually do them on coloured paper what colour do you want? Also A3 is no problem. Robyn

Ariane said...

Thanks Robyn. White paper will be fine, because the image covers the whole page (and besides, there is white writing, which will need a white background in order to be white)

I am not quite finished - I want to sort out some details about the wine and the Moonbie St thing first, but as soon as that is sorted I'll get it through to you.

Ariane said...

Oh, also, Isabelle has kindly volunteered to make the tickets themselves. Thanks Isabelle. :)

What do you think about adding a reminder on the bottem of each ticket for cake donations? Would that be too pushy??

Kath, brillian news re child minding - well done.

Robyn

Ariane said...

Robyn, I don't think it's too pushy, but I suspect it may not be very effective - I'm not sure if people read them! :)

I don't mind either way, what do other people think?

Also, Kath, what are the conditions on the Moonbie St thing? Like what ages do they take? And we'll need to settle on a cost so I can get that on the posters too. I think smaller cost is the primary concern, because we are already charging people for the trivia and wanting them to spend cash when they get there. Ben sounded pretty chuffed just at the idea of getting dressed up, so I don't think you have to work too hard to sell it to the kids, but other people's kids may be different.

Ariane,
I have no relationship with any of the retailers at Dulwich Hill, wouldn't even know where they were to be frank. Whereas I've lived in Summer Hill 18 years. As I've said, I'm more than happy to do the shops there but Dulwich Hill might be better left to someone more local.

last year I made vouchers for the businesses' that do not supply their own gift vouchers. I just made them up and the contact went back to them and had them sign it and put a used by date on it.
Would you like me to do the smae thing this year?

Hi Linda - I'm sorry, I've failed in the communication department here - I didn't realise you only wanted to do Summer Hill.

Cath Hawkshaw and Kathrine Wawatai are tackling Summer Hill, but I'm sure they could use some help.

Is anyone else in a position to do Dulwich Hill shops? If not, we can just not do them - I don't want to cause anyone any grief, this isn't supposed to be an exercise in torture. :)

Isabelle - sounds fantastic if you can. Do you have time?

Thanks everyone.

Happy to do a little of everything but relationships are often the key. I've already approached Blockbuster Video at SH who are pledging a couple of movies. I'll also speak to Kevin Santos, of Summer Hill Pharmacy. He's a neighbour of mine. Gus the Butcher and Tony the fruiterer we've known forever, but others might have an equally strong relationship. Steven knows Nina, owner of Envy Cafe, very well, and he can talk to her. I'll also approach cold a couple of businesses along Parramatta Rd, Midas and Bob Jane. If you like I'll also see if Harris Tripp might make a donation. We bought our first unit from them and were about to sell recently until we decided on the renos. Anyone frequent Sideways Cafe? I can tackle select businesses at Dulwich Hill but someone local will have to give me guidance about where to start, and I still think it works best if you are a customer.

From Linda - crossposted here in case people are only reading this thread:

Hi Ariane, Just an update on donations: Summer Hill Pharmacy is pledging us a basket of goodies. Envy will donate us a piece of art work. The video shop, as I've mentioned before, is happy to give us a couple of movies. I'll press on with a few Parramatta Rd businesses, but I assume the other Summer Hill shopkeepers will be covered by the fund raising committee unless I hear differently. I'll grab those letters when you've got them. Anyone friendly with Friendly's Chemist? Linda

Ariane said...

Linda - I have the begging letter ready to go now, but I've realised I don't have your email address. Can you please send me an email so I can send it to you?

If anyone else wants a copy to take to some particular business they know or some such, just drop an email and I'll send it through to you.

Ariane,
Here's the update you wanted on the donations front:

I've forwarded to you the generous $200 donation from Harris Tripp.
I have a few gift items from work which I'll detail later.
I'm waiting to hear from you as to what other specific businesses you want me to approach,
Hope it helps,
Linda

And from me:

Thanks Linda - fantastic - DEFINITELY helps.

Cross-commented from Reminders:

Hi Ariane,

I have approached everyone on both sides of Lackey Street apart from a few who were closed which I can try tomorrow or Weds.
So far - Bean tampered will give us a kilo of coffee beans. The Hair Chair will provide a gift pack. Cafe Strada will give a big breakfast with coffee. Summer Fresh Fuit & Veg will give a $30 voucher.SH Quality Meats will give us a voucher( amount to be confirmed). Mancinis will give us a (or some) vouchers (Amount also tbc). All of these I pick up Friday. Plus Bob Bush has provided a $180 voucher which I have already. I have a few to go back to and 7 that were not open. Went on a Monday the first week and then forgot & made the mistake of going back on a Monday!! Duh....
I haven't done the Summer Hill Pub (too hard for now) but I will do Expresso Train on the opposite corner, I've done Lucys Florist and the business opposite. I haven't done the hairdresser or gym (but can if no-one else can) and have left Monkey Puzzle and SH cellars as discussed.
So lots more possibles but I will do them by Weds.

I have made up the gift certificates for the places that do not supply their own. If you need any please email me on lecalvez@optusnet.com.au and I will email copies to you. They will need to be printed out on white cardstock and taken back to the business for them to sign.

Sorry - I haven't been using this blog properly and hav only just figured out where all the comments are so I missed all the earlier info about where Linda has been. Luckily we seem to have only doubled up on one - the pharmacy.

Has anyone been into Il Villagio or the Therapy place next door? I can tomorrow afternoon if no-one else has.

P.S. The Gift Certificates are great!

Hi Ariane,

I really need to get a look at the room early next week to know what I'm dealing with for decoration. Can you line something up or pass on the contact persons number and I'll arrange to have a look asap.

Going really well with donations - these businesses and so generous - too many to detail now but still have things to pick up right thru to the end of next week. Have done all of Lackey St and Hardie Ave and some of Smith St too. When do we sort all this stuff out?

I'm going to need some serious decoration assisting. When do we have access to the room?
Are we meeting sometime to check logistics?

Kath W

Ariane said...

Hi Kath,

Yes, when are you available next week? They basically told me not to bother them this week, which is why I hadn't done anything yet.

Thanks for all the asking, it's gone pretty well (despite some failures in communication, but the school hols made it hard for everyone).

We were going to sort out all the stuff tomorrow, but it just hasn't been possible to get everything in and ready to go. Maybe next Wednesday night might work - depends on when it all arrives.

Lots of lovely people have asked how they can help, so I'm sure we can get you some decorating assistance. We have at least 3 or 4 people to help set up on the day - what else are you looking for?

(BTW, I get an email when comments are left, so if I'm near email, I'll know it's there. Anyone else that wants email notification of comments on anything in particular can also check the "Email follow-up" box underneath the comment window - or if you have a desperate desire to know about all the comments, I can organise to do that too!)

Hi Ariane,

Obviously I still haven't figured out how this blog really works. Or is it true we are nearly the only ones using it?????

Weds 8.30 am is great. See you at Canterbury.

I dont know if anyone has done Sideways Cafe on Constitution Rd? I can on Weds morning if no-one has. Do you know?
Have covered all of Lackey Street now.
Have covered Hardie Ave too.
Also because I was going into or buying from these places Friday morning - I did Smith St - MUSE, Alimento, Decolata, My Messy room, and Cath H got the Post Office. Thats all I'm aware of.

Hopefully catch up with this at school in the morning.

Kathrine

Ariane said...

I don't know if anyone's done Sideways either - but only you, Linda and Cath H have done anyone in Summer Hill, so probably need to check with them.

There are other people reading the blog (we get 5-10 hits a day), but not so many people are comfortable with it as an interface. But then not everyone reads their email regularly either, or turns up at school every day, so it's pretty difficult to ensure everyone gets all the messages.

I'll be there in the morning - possibly not in the afternoon.

Ariane said...

Looks like Wednesday night is the night for the great prize sorting.

What time should we start? 7pm? What suits people?

I'll put this up as a post as well. If you don't know my address, send me an email or grab me at school - I'm not so inclined to stick my address on a public forum. :)

Hi everyone, just dropped in to see what's happening. Sorry if I have missed anything, have been pre-occupied with very sick cat. Sort of lost track of everything.

I will be there on Wed to help with packaging etc. 7.00ish is fine - what do you need us to bring - sticky tape, scissors?? Kath, I am available to help with decorating -both on the day or before hand, let me know what you need. Robyn.

Hi again, Re this morning's chat about Summer Hill wine shop, I spoke to Maggie a little while ago and she is not approaching them, nor did she know of any reason why we shouldn't as there are no other events comming up that she could think of. They have been generous in the past. Hope this helps, Robyn.

Ariane said...

Re: Summer Hill wine shop - the reason we balked at approaching them was that we would be tasting our own label of wine coming from another supplier - if people think this won't bother them, then go ahead!

Congratulations to Ariane, Kath, Cath, Cath, Robyn, Effie, Maggie, Isabelle and everyone else I've missed for a fabulous evening of trivia. What a huge personal effort you all put in to make the night as a successful as it was. Not only that, you were first to dip into your pockets to ensure that funds were raised for the kids. Every parent with a child at Yeo Park who benefits from the subsidised gymnastic lessons, the special lunches, the air conditioned classrooms, myself included, should dip their hats to you in gratefulness. Also wanted to mention Ariane's sister who did a fabulous job on the trivia, the gang from kindy who made up two great tables, our table capt Robyn's husband, Don, Lucy, who at one stage was going to scoop 90 per cent of the silent auction prizes and Shem's offer of trampoline lessons and his mum's offer of a half day of gardening which were the best prizes of the night. You are all entitled to a lie down.
Linda

Ariane,
Can you do up appreciation certificates for Kevin Santos (Summer Hill chemist) and Blockbuster Video, Summer Hill, both of which contributed prizes to the silent auction. I'll be sure to get these to them and it will be sure to help with future donations.
Linda

Hi Linda, I've sent those to Kris today, you should be able to grab them this afternoon.
